No website? A proper WhatsApp catalog can be your shop window

You may not need a website yet. A well-organized WhatsApp catalog with prices, photos, and quick replies converts better than a half-built site. Here is how to set one up properly.

WhatsApp for Business's own testimonial series from 2026 features Nancy Umeh, CEO of Radiance Cookware in Nigeria. She ran her business for years without a website. After she set up the WhatsApp Catalog properly, she says sales increased by 50%, because customers could browse, add items, and pay without leaving the chat.

Her whole path is click-to-WhatsApp ads straight into the catalog. No website, no checkout page. And she is not an outlier. Indian sellers do this every day: boutique @yaar_beli_garments_ posts WhatsApp chat screenshots as order receipts, and home brands like @the_sarave and @invision.ladieslifestyle publish step-by-step how-to-order guides that all end in a WhatsApp chat.

The counterintuitive advice

Here it is, from a person who builds websites for a living: you may not need one yet. A half-built website with three products, no prices, and a contact form nobody checks will lose to a good WhatsApp catalog every time. Customers do not care about your technology. They care about seeing the product, knowing the price, and getting an answer.

A website earns its place when the catalog starts breaking: when you need order tracking, real payments, or inventory that updates itself. Until then, the catalog is the shop window, the salesperson, and the till, all inside the app your customer already has.

Set the catalog up properly

Most catalogs fail on the basics. Put a price on everything. A product without a price is a product that generates a price question, which is a message you have to answer by hand, which is the opposite of a system. Use real photos, not supplier stock images. Your customer wants to see what arrives at their door.

Organize by category, not by the order you added things. New arrivals, bestsellers, sizes, whatever matches how your customer shops. Write descriptions that answer the question before it is asked: size, material, delivery time, return terms. Every question your catalog answers is a message you never have to type.

Then set up quick replies for the rest. How do I order? What are the delivery charges? Is this in stock? If you have typed the same answer twenty times, it belongs in a quick reply. That is not automation. That is just not retyping.

Give every item a simple code: KUR-014, not the blue kurta with the small flowers. Codes make the screenshot flow work: the customer sends the code, you know the exact item, size, and price without scrolling. Put the code in the item name so it is visible in the chat, not buried in the description.

Run the chat like a counter

The sellers who win on WhatsApp treat the chat like a shop counter. Reply fast. Confirm the order in one message: item, size, quantity, total, delivery date. Ask for the address in the same message. Send the payment details right after. Every round trip you remove is a sale that does not cool off.

Post your chat screenshots as receipts, like @yaar_beli_garments_ does. It is social proof and it costs nothing. Pin your how-to-order steps in your profile. Make the path from wanting the product to paying for it as short as you possibly can.

Use broadcast lists for restocks and new arrivals, but remember the new pricing: broadcasts are marketing messages at Rs 0.8631 each. A broadcast to 500 people costs about Rs 430 before GST. Send it when you have something worth announcing, not every Tuesday out of habit.

When the catalog starts breaking

Watch for three signs. One: you lose track of who paid for what. Two: customers ask where their order is, and you have to scroll through chats to answer. Three: you sell something that is out of stock because the catalog does not know.

Those are the signs that chat plus catalog has done its job and hit its limit. That is the point a simple order system pays for itself: one place where orders, payments, and stock agree with each other. Until you see those signs, spend your energy on the catalog, not on a website you do not need yet.

Common questions

Can I run a business with no website, only WhatsApp?
Yes. Nancy Umeh of Radiance Cookware in Nigeria ran for years without a website and says sales rose 50% after setting up the WhatsApp Catalog properly, with click-to-WhatsApp ads feeding straight into it.
What makes a WhatsApp catalog convert?
A price on everything, real photos, organized categories, descriptions that answer questions upfront, and quick replies for the questions that repeat.
When should I move from a catalog to a website or order system?
When you lose track of who paid for what, spend your day scrolling chats for order status, or sell out-of-stock items. That is when a proper order system pays for itself.
