At its Business Summit in Mumbai on July 7, 2026, Meta launched the Meta Business Agent for WhatsApp in India. It is a free AI assistant that lives inside the WhatsApp Business app. No code, no integration, no invoice.
Over 1 million businesses used it during the two-year test across India, Mexico, and Brazil, according to SquidCircle's write-up of the June 3, 2026 global launch. A setup tutorial by creator @ishansharma7390 on September 22, 2026 pulled 12K likes, and the comments are full of practical setup questions. Owners are curious, and rightly so. It is free, and it works inside the app they already open fifty times a day.
What it actually does
The agent answers common questions from your business information, recommends products from your catalog, books appointments, and qualifies leads. It also sends you a morning summary of the chats you missed overnight, so you wake up to a digest instead of a pile of unread messages.
For a shop or clinic owner, the after-hours part alone is worth the setup time. The customer who messages at 11 pm gets an answer instead of silence. The owner reads the summary with morning chai instead of scrolling through raw chats.
Who it is for
It is for owners whose questions repeat. Timings, prices, location, whether a service is available, how to book. If eighty percent of your chats are the same ten questions, this tool eats them for free.
It is also for owners who are not ready for custom software. There is no shame in that. A free tool that answers FAQs tonight beats a perfect system that ships next quarter. Start here if you have not started anywhere.
Set it up in ten minutes
Open the WhatsApp Business app and find the Business AI setup. Connect your business information and your product catalog. Then write down the five questions you answer most and add them as FAQs: timings, price list, location, how to book, and whatever your customers always ask first.
Test it after hours from a second phone. Ask the questions a real customer asks, in the words they use, including the misspellings. Fix the answers that come back wrong. Ten minutes of setup and ten minutes of testing beats a month of wondering why it gives odd answers.
Where it stops
It stops where your business gets specific. It cannot run your custom flows, talk to your own systems, take payments the way you take them, or do anything that lives outside what Meta owns. It is an assistant inside Meta's app, and it plays by Meta's rules.
It will not connect to your inventory spreadsheet, your booking register, or your delivery rider's phone. It will not learn that Mrs. Sharma always wants the Tuesday slot and offer it first. Generic help is free. Specific help is a different build.
And remember who owns the relationship. The agent lives in Meta's app, on Meta's terms. Your customer list, your conversation history, and your business logic stay inside their walls. That is fine for FAQs. It is a reason to think twice before building your whole customer operation on it.
My honest take
Use the free tool. Seriously. Set it up this week if your after-hours chats go unanswered. It costs nothing and it handles the boring, repeated questions better than an exhausted owner at midnight.
And when it cannot do what your business needs, when the flow has to touch your systems, your payments, your people, that is when custom automation earns its keep. The free agent shows you what automation feels like. A custom build makes it yours.

Common questions
- What is the Meta Business Agent?
- A free AI assistant inside the WhatsApp Business app, launched in India at Meta's Business Summit in Mumbai on July 7, 2026. It answers questions, recommends catalog products, books appointments, qualifies leads, and sends a morning summary of missed chats.
- How much does it cost?
- Nothing. It is free inside the WhatsApp Business app and needs no coding to set up.
- Can it connect to my own systems?
- No. It works with your business profile and catalog inside Meta's apps. Custom flows, your own software, and payments need a separate build.
- Should I still build custom WhatsApp automation?
- Start with the free agent. Build custom when your business needs flows it cannot do: your systems, your payments, your specific process.
